Summer Reading Non-fiction #1

                                                                                                                                                8/17/11

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,

I just finished reading Black and White by Paul Volponi.
It was one of the few non-fiction books I read, I usually read fiction. There was one passage that I picked because it showed what the book would be about. It was '' But I was never as shook as when the gun in Eddie's hand went off ''. The passage showed the personality of the main characters.
Before I read the book I read the back to see what it was about and I looked at the front cover to see what I could understand then. While I was reading I read the last sentence before I started again to recognize what was going on. Also I read for certain amounts of time so I wouldn't cram my mind. Finally, after I read I looked back at the front cover so I could now understand what it means. After that I made sure I understood what I read in order to write about it.
The genre of this book is a non-fiction memoir because the main character would say my hand is in my coat pocket but he says that it was in my coat pocket. The topic is basketball because the main characters were the best on their team and were going to get scholerships until they made a mistake and pulled stickups. The main idea in the book is criminals playing basketball doesn't work out. The main idea is implied because I had to figure out what the book was talking about. Another title I would give the book is ''Dreams Crushed     Stupid Decision''. I would call it that because the main characters' dream was playing basketball and it was destroyed over them going to jail. There are no supporting details considering the main idea is implied. The essential message in the book is that commiting crimes can and will crush your dreams. The cause in the text is pulling stickups, while the effect is crushing there dreams and going to jail. The similarities between Marcus and Eddie the (main characters) are that they both are interested in basketall and they both are really good at it. The differences are that their different races and Eddie was the one who pulled the gun out on someone in the stickup. Some text features are a picture of Marcus and Eddie playing basketball, calling all the chapters either black or white which shows some racism. Finally there are some reviews on the back complimenting the book. There were no more text features in the book. The P.O.O. in the book is foreshadowing because at the beggining of the book it talked about shooting someone which happened in the middle of the book and it helped me to know what the book was about.
The author's purpose in the story is to persuade readers not to commit crimes for it could ruin their dreams and lives. The author believes that commiting crimes can ruin your lives which I believe too. The author is objective because he is not influenced by anything or any one. The book has an important message which is that commiting crimes will tear your life apart. I was familiar with all the vocab words although it was a teen book. A connection in the book with me is that I also love to play basketball a lot. A connection between another book and this one is the City of Bones because Clary had friends who were not her kind such as Eddie who had a black friend. A connection between this book and the world is that a lot of people are commiting crimes and they all have to pay the price. I believe that the crime issue in the world will never stop. I rate this book a 7 out of 10 because although it was interesting it had a lot of suspense.

                     Sincerely,
                                    Isaac Paley
